Gift List for Nurses and Nursing Students

With the holiday season upon us, perhaps you have been wondering what to get for that nursing student or nurse on your list. I reached out to a few of my nursing friends for some ideas and they came through big time! (Thanks, friends!) So without further ado, here are the best gifts for nurses and nursing students. They are organized by category and then loosely organized by price, so you're sure to find something that fits your budget and warms their heart!

Food:
Chocolate
If you stop reading here and buy chocolate for everyone on your list, you are already a winner.

Coffee
Coffee is always a good option.

Arizona Green Tea
I love this tea!

Cute lunch boxes

Water bottle
Especially ones that keep drinks cold for hours like this one.

Mug
Contigos are the way to go! They keep hot drinks hot!

Tervis
Tervis serves double duty: cold drinks stay cold, and hot drinks stay hot.

Tools:
Retractable Badge Clips
You want one that can rotate 360° like this one

Bandage scissors

Smear-proof pens, multi-colored
A nurse can never have too many pens! I particularly love these because they come in several different colors and don't bleed through paper. They are also retractable, so I don't have to worry about losing the cap!

Expo markers
If there's one thing a nurse needs but can never find, it's the marker to update the whiteboard, amIrite?

Clipboard
Especially helpful for nursing students and new grads, this clipboard has reference tools galore. It is small and can fold to fit into a scrub top pocket.

Small sticky notes
Perfect for writing down vital signs, lab results, or any other of the million things nurses have to keep straight in their brains.

Penlight that goes on badge
This penlight is helpful for examining down the throat or sneaking in to do a quick assessment in the middle of the night.

Sharpie that attaches to badge
A "sharp" nurse will always have a permanent marker near by 😉

Pill cutter
The most valuable commodity on the floor is arguably the pill splitter. Be a team player and let the other nurses borrow yours...but make sure you get that thing back!

Exercise Tracking watch
There are many smart watches on the market today. I have this Fitbit Flex 2. It tracks my steps, distance traveled, active minutes, etc. and is waterproof.

Stethoscope
I have had this Littmann Stethoscope since nursing school and through several years of bedside nursing and it has served me well!

Clothing:
I'm planning to do a clothing post sometime in the future. Check with your nursing student or nurse to see what type of scrubs they are allowed to wear at their facility. Some hospitals are very specific with what colors and styles their staff can wear, including scrub jackets.

Nurse necklace
Super cute!

Books:
Your First Year as a Nurse
This book comes highly recommended by a friend of mine from nursing school!

Josie's Story
Must read for all medical professionals! This book is a memoir by a mom who lost her daughter to a medical error and went on to make a difference in healthcare systems across the country.

When Breath Becomes Air
Interesting story about a doctor who is suddenly a patient and learns to face the medical field from a whole new perspective

There are many other books out there for nurses. More recommendations to come!

Gift Cards:
Uniform/scrub places like Scrubs and BeyondStarbucksAmazon, or Spotify.
